Last week we started a Healthy Living Series, talking about the things that you could do to be as healthy as possible. We discussed nutrition, and how eating the right foods is vital for our health. This week we will be looking at how, despite focusing on eating well and cutting out processed foods, we still need to add supplements to our diet for optimal health.
Research has shown that our food is just not as nutritious as it used to be, meaning, that we are not getting the full vitamin and mineral content from the food as previous generations.
We can address this by using supplements.
It is important to note that the type of supplements you take is important.
Make sure that your supplements are:
- Good quality
- Sourced well
- Absorbed well
- Top tip to know if your supplement is absorbable:
- Drop the tablet in a glass of water
- See how long it takes to dissolve
- The quicker the better! (Some do not dissolve at all – not good!)
- Liposomal
- Smaller molecules that your body can absorb. Supplements are only as good as what your body can absorb
- Top tip to know if your supplement is absorbable:
A good source for supplement information that I recommend is Dr. Mercola, (mercola.com). He is a great source of information on supplements as well as a supplier of excellent supplements, my husband and I take many of their supplements.
What supplements can you be focusing on?
Everyone would do well to take a look at:
- Vitamin C
- Krill oil for Omega 3
- CoQ10
- At age 40+, your body doesn’t absorb CoQ10 very well
- Important for heart health
- Vitamin D
- Most people are deficient in vitamin D.
- Your body actually needs vitamin D to make your immune system work correctly
- A general multivitamin
- Helps to “cover all the bases”
Another company that I recommend for great supplements is doTERRA. I personally take the “Life Vitality Pack” – a great multi across the board, that gives you a broad range of things for kidney function and more.
