Deadline Alert: Health Insurance Access Changes for Low-Income Families & DACA Recipients

Important Health Insurance Changes Effective August 25 – Don’t Miss These Deadlines

Today’s update is an important one because big healthcare changes are coming soon, and they could affect thousands of people. If you or someone you know has a low income or is a DACA recipient, this information is critical. Let’s break it down in simple terms so you know what to do before it’s too late.

Change #1: Special Enrollment for Low-Income Families Ends August 25

Up until now, people with incomes at or below 150% of the federal poverty level could enroll in Marketplace health insurance at any time. This was a great option for individuals and families who needed coverage outside of the normal Open Enrollment period, making healthcare more accessible for those who needed it most.

What’s Changing?

Starting August 25, that option goes away. After that date:

✔ You will only be able to enroll during Open Enrollment, which begins November 1, 2025 and runs through December 15, 2025.

✔ Coverage from that enrollment period won’t begin until January 2026.

What Should You Do?

If your income is low and you’ve been holding off on getting health insurance because you thought you couldn’t afford it, reach out to me before August 25. We can get you enrolled now and secure your coverage for the rest of the year.

Change #2: Health Coverage for DACA Recipients Ends August 25

Another major change affects DACA recipients (those who came to the U.S. as minors under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program). Many have been able to enroll in health insurance through the Marketplace, which was a huge win for access to care.

But here’s the bad news:

✔ As of August 25, all Marketplace coverage for DACA recipients will be terminated.

✔ You will not be able to get health insurance through the Marketplace or other major programs.

What Can You Do If This Affects You?

If you’re a DACA recipient with health insurance, take action immediately:

✔ Schedule any doctor visits or procedures you’ve been postponing.

✔ Request 90-day prescription refills if possible.

✔ Explore discount medication programs like GoodRx to prepare for out-of-pocket costs.

Unfortunately, there’s currently no alternative option for coverage once your policy ends—but planning ahead can help ease the transition.

Why This Matters

Both of these changes will leave many people without coverage if they don’t act before the deadline. Don’t wait for a letter in the mail—by the time you receive it, it might be too late.
