Texas Teachers: Is TRS Health Insurance Still the Best Option for Your Family?
I know it’s only the end of June, and summer break feels like it just started. But before we know it, teachers will be heading back to school, classrooms will be opening, and one important decision will be waiting:
Health insurance enrollment.
This year, many Texas teachers are facing significant increases in TRS health insurance premiums. As rates continue to rise, it’s becoming more important than ever to evaluate whether TRS coverage is still the best option for your entire family.
Understanding the TRS Advantage
For many teachers, TRS health insurance remains an excellent value—especially for employee-only coverage.
Most school districts provide a monthly contribution toward health insurance premiums. Depending on the district, that contribution can range from several hundred dollars per month to even more.
For a teacher covering only themselves, TRS is often the most affordable option available.
The challenge comes when it’s time to add a spouse and children.
The Cost of Family Coverage
While employee-only coverage may remain affordable, family coverage can become very expensive.
Many teachers are surprised when they see the cost of adding:
- A spouse
- Children
- Or both
As premiums increase, family coverage through TRS may no longer be the most cost-effective solution.
That’s where it becomes important to explore all available options.
What If Your Spouse Has Employer Coverage?
If your spouse has access to health insurance through their employer, it is usually worth comparing costs.
Why?
Because employers often pay a significant portion of employee premiums.
In many cases, failing to evaluate employer-sponsored coverage means leaving valuable employer contributions on the table.
Even if your spouse’s plan isn’t perfect, the savings may be substantial.
Splitting Coverage May Save Money
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that the entire family must stay on the same health insurance plan.
That’s not always true.
Sometimes the most cost-effective solution looks like this:
- Teacher remains on TRS coverage
- Spouse enrolls through their employer
- Children enroll on a separate plan
Or:
- Teacher remains on TRS coverage
- Spouse and children enroll together on another policy
Every family’s situation is different.
The goal is to find the combination that provides the best balance between:
- Premium costs
- Doctor access
- Prescription coverage
- Overall benefits
Health Conditions Matter
When evaluating alternatives, your family’s healthcare needs play a major role.
Questions we review include:
- Do you have ongoing medical conditions?
- Are there specialists you need to keep?
- Do you take expensive medications?
- Are specific doctors important to your family?
The more complex your healthcare needs, the more carefully we need to evaluate your options.
“But It’s Not Open Enrollment”
This is one of the most common questions I receive.
The good news is that changes to employer-sponsored coverage often create a Special Enrollment Period.
If family members are losing coverage through a TRS plan, that qualifying event may allow enrollment into other coverage options outside of the traditional Open Enrollment period.
However, timing matters.
If you wait too long, you could create unnecessary gaps in coverage.
That’s why I encourage teachers to begin reviewing their options during the summer rather than waiting until the last minute.
Don’t Forget Dental and Vision
Even if changing medical coverage makes sense, TRS dental and vision benefits may still provide excellent value.
In some cases, it makes sense to:
- Keep TRS dental coverage
- Keep TRS vision coverage
- Explore alternative medical coverage
Again, every situation is unique.

Teachers already work incredibly hard, and rising healthcare costs only add more financial pressure.
