Baylor Scott & White Marketplace Plans Are Leaving in 2027: What You Need to Know
As we head toward the end of summer, I’m already learning about some of the changes coming to individual health insurance plans for next year. While I’m sure there will be more updates, one of the biggest changes I’ve learned about is this:
Baylor Scott & White Health Plan will no longer be offered on the individual Marketplace beginning in 2027.
If you’re currently enrolled in a Baylor Scott & White Marketplace plan, this change could significantly impact your healthcare options.
What Happens If You Currently Have Baylor Scott & White Coverage?
If you do nothing during Open Enrollment, the Marketplace may automatically enroll you into another plan.
Unfortunately, auto-renewed plans aren’t always the best fit.
The Marketplace doesn’t know:
- Which doctors you use
- Which hospitals you prefer
- Which prescriptions you take
- Whether your providers are in-network
As we’ve seen with other carrier exits in the past, automatic plan assignments can leave people with coverage that doesn’t work for their healthcare needs.
Baylor Scott & White Providers May Become Difficult to Access
One of the challenges with this change is that Baylor Scott & White providers have historically accepted a limited number of Marketplace plans.
For many patients, the options were primarily:
- Baylor Scott & White Health Plan
- Certain higher-cost Blue Cross Blue Shield plans
As a result, if you currently receive care through the Baylor Scott & White system, it may become increasingly difficult to find affordable Marketplace coverage that keeps your providers in-network.
Should You Consider Changing Primary Care Doctors?
This is a personal decision, but it’s something worth considering.
If your primary care physician is within the Baylor Scott & White network, you may want to begin exploring other options before Open Enrollment.
Changing providers is never easy, especially when you’ve built a relationship with your doctor. However, planning ahead may provide more flexibility when selecting a health insurance plan for 2027.
Emergency Care and Out-of-Network Costs
Another important consideration is emergency care and hospital services.
Out-of-network hospital services can become very expensive, particularly if your insurance plan doesn’t have favorable out-of-network benefits.
Unexpected medical bills can quickly become overwhelming, which is why understanding your network and coverage options ahead of time is so important.
Additional Changes in the Lakeway Area
Another change affecting many local families is that the Baylor Scott & White location in Lakeway is no longer offering labor and delivery services.
For expecting mothers who planned to deliver there, this means additional planning and potentially changing hospitals or providers.
Why This Matters During Open Enrollment
Every year, I encourage clients to review:
- Their doctors
- Their prescriptions
- Their preferred hospitals
- Their overall healthcare needs
This upcoming change makes those conversations even more important.
If you’re currently enrolled in a Baylor Scott & White Marketplace plan, don’t wait until the last minute.
Open Enrollment is the perfect opportunity to:
- Review your options
- Compare plans
- Verify provider networks
- Find coverage that fits your family’s needs and budget
Final Thoughts
Health insurance changes happen every year, and unfortunately, carrier exits can create a lot of confusion and disruption.
The good news is that there are still options available.
The key is planning ahead and understanding your choices before Open Enrollment begins.
