Travel Health Insurance

I get a lot of questions about insurance for international travel. Generally, in the past, I’ve told people that depending on where you’re going, you may not need travel health insurance.

  • There are some caveats to this:
    • It may be if you have some health issues, you do want some coverage in case of emergency.
    • You may need to be brought home and that would come at a cost.

In a lot of countries, it’s very inexpensive as opposed to here, to seek healthcare. You can just pay cash, and not be out very much.

Some countries have socialized medicine, they will treat you if you have an emergency and you will not get billed.

But I want to speak today about people who are going to travel consistently, and possibly be gone for a few months at a time.

There are some great plans from BlueCross BlueShield that provide PPO coverage if you’re when you’re here in the US, but then also coverage outside the US for emergencies.

  • These policies can be designed in various ways:
    • if you’re going to be back and forth a lot, there’s one policy that we can do which lasts you 12 months
    • There are shorter-term policies, we’re only going to be gone for a little bit of time.
    • If you’re traveling consistently, we can do a plan that also gives you access here in the United States.
      • So when you are here, you can see care no matter what state you’re in, because it’s a nationwide PPO.
      • It’s an interesting concept.
      • There are some rules around it about how long you’re going to be gone.
      • They track with your passport when you’re coming in and out of the country.

If you are interested in finding the right plan for you, you can hop onto my website and schedule an appointment with me there. If you want to discuss this, if you have future travel, let’s figure out what makes sense for you.
