Looking for Lower Health Insurance Premiums? A Guaranteed-Issue PPO May Be an Option

This week, I want to revisit a health insurance option that I mentioned a few months ago because it’s been helping many clients significantly reduce their monthly premiums.

If you’re struggling with the cost of Marketplace coverage—or you’re currently uninsured—this may be worth exploring.

A Guaranteed-Issue PPO Option

One of the plans I offer is a guaranteed-issue PPO that utilizes the PHCS provider network, one of the largest nationwide PPO networks.

One of the biggest advantages is that there are no health questions to qualify.

While there is generally a waiting period for certain pre-existing conditions before those conditions are covered, the plan can still be an excellent fit for many people.

Who Might Benefit?

This plan may be worth considering if:

  • You currently have an ACA Marketplace plan and pay the full premium.
  • You don’t qualify for premium tax credits.
  • Your pre-existing conditions are stable and well-managed.
  • You’re primarily taking generic medications.
  • You’re looking to lower your monthly premium while maintaining major medical protection.

Every situation is different, which is why I always perform an individual evaluation before making any recommendation.

Real-Life Example

Recently, I worked with a client who was paying $1,200 per month for Marketplace coverage because they did not qualify for any tax credits.

After reviewing their healthcare needs, medications, and overall medical history, we determined this guaranteed-issue PPO was a better fit.

Their new premium?

Approximately $615 per month.

That’s a savings of nearly $600 every month.

While there may be some out-of-pocket expenses related to pre-existing conditions during the waiting period, the overall financial picture was still significantly better.

Sometimes it’s not just about what you pay at the doctor’s office—it’s about your total annual healthcare costs.

Looking at the Big Picture

When I help clients compare plans, we don’t just compare premiums.

We also look at:

  • Monthly premium
  • Doctor visits
  • Prescription costs
  • Expected medical care
  • Potential out-of-pocket expenses
  • Overall yearly cost

Sometimes paying slightly more for a doctor visit still saves thousands of dollars over the course of a year because the monthly premium is so much lower.

That’s why every recommendation starts with a cost analysis.

No Coverage? This May Be an Option

This plan can also be a great solution if you’re currently without health insurance.

Unlike Marketplace plans that require Open Enrollment or a qualifying life event, this type of plan can often be applied for throughout the year.

If you’re worried about going without coverage, it’s worth seeing whether this option fits your situation.

Marketplace Plans Are Month-to-Month

Another misconception I hear often is:

“I’m stuck with my Marketplace plan until next Open Enrollment.”

In most cases, that’s not true.

Individual Marketplace plans are generally month-to-month, which means you can cancel them if you choose another qualifying coverage option.

(Employer-sponsored health insurance works differently and follows separate enrollment rules.)

Let’s Find the Right Fit

The guaranteed-issue PPO isn’t the right solution for everyone.

In fact, depending on your health and circumstances, I may recommend another option that could save you even more.

That’s why I take the time to review:

  • Your current coverage
  • Any pre-existing conditions
  • Your medications
  • Your doctors
  • Your budget
  • Your long-term healthcare goals

The goal is always the same: find the coverage that provides the best value for your specific situation.

If rising health insurance premiums are putting pressure on your budget, let’s talk. We can review your options and determine whether this guaranteed-issue PPO—or another alternative—might be a better fit for you.
