In today’s blog, we are discussing how to utilize the Marketplace and how health care subsidies work. A lot of people don’t realize that when the new law was signed in March, that the guidelines for subsidies were changed. One of those changes is that if you do not have access to employer-sponsored healthcare and if you’re not in your 60-day Cobra enrollment period you possibly will also qualify for a subsidy.

There is a formula that I use – where I plug in your salary – and it will give us an amount of how much you qualify for. There’s also an end cap, where your premium should not be more than eight and a half percent of your income. So, using this information, I sort through the plans that work with your subsidy and then help you choose the best plan.

In choosing a plan, I also assist you in considering any doctors that you currently see and medications you currently take. It is important to make sure that you have a plan that you won’t have to switch doctors if you don’t want to.

Being able to use a health insurance agent such as myself can really save you money. A very lovely lady told me she called in and they were trying to give her the $800 plan where in fact, she qualified for coverage for only $120 a month. She was able to sign up for this particular plan because I plugged in all her information, and I asked her a lot of questions. She now has coverage that she’s super excited about.
