The Power of Sleep: A Key Step in Foundational Wellness
Last week, we talked about foundational wellness and the role high-quality supplements play in your overall health. This week, we’re focusing on something just as important—sleep.
We all know sleep matters, but it’s often the first thing we sacrifice in our busy lives. The truth is, you can’t be well if you’re not getting quality rest. Sleep is when your body heals, recharges, and resets.
If you’re feeling run-down, sluggish, or just not quite yourself, take a look at your sleep habits. You may be surprised at how much of a difference a few simple changes can make.
Tips for Better Sleep
One of the easiest ways to improve your sleep is to turn off electronics at least an hour before bed. The blue light from screens can interfere with melatonin production and throw off your circadian rhythm. Your body needs darkness to properly prepare for rest, just like it needs sunlight in the morning to stay on track. Getting outside for 15–20 minutes in the early morning light can help reset your internal clock.
Avoid taking your phone to bed, and if you must read before sleep, consider using a device with a backlight filter—or better yet, go old-school with a book. Some people even use blue light–blocking glasses in the evening to help their body wind down.
Another helpful shift is sticking to a regular sleep schedule. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day—even on weekends. I know, it’s hard. But keeping your sleep cycle consistent helps your body function better overall.
Fun fact: your most restorative sleep happens before midnight. A friend of mine started going to bed at 9:00 p.m. and waking up at 4:30 a.m., and she felt more rested than when she stayed up late. It’s something to think about!
Natural Sleep Support That Works
There are lots of natural options to support sleep, and everyone’s body is different. For me, I love using a product called Serenity. It comes in a few forms—capsules, essential oils, and a topical stick with valerian root. I use a mix of the oil and capsules, and I sleep great most nights. The capsules contain a little melatonin and help me stay asleep without any grogginess.
I skip the sleep teas because I don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night needing the bathroom. But again, it’s about finding what works best for you.
Here’s something else I’ve learned—essential oils can actually help your body absorb supplements more effectively. So if you’re investing in your health, adding oils to your routine can help maximize the benefits.
Also worth noting: sleeping pills may knock you out, but they don’t offer truly restorative sleep, and many come with unwanted side effects. And while alcohol may make you drowsy at first, it actually disrupts sleep cycles. If you’re going to have a drink, try to do it earlier in the day—not right before bed.
Why This Matters for Your Health and Insurance
As a health insurance broker, I help people find the right coverage. But I also want to see you live well and thrive. Because the healthier you are, the fewer medical expenses you’ll face—and that can mean lower premiums and more plan options in the long run.
Better sleep = better health = better financial outcomes. It really is all connected.
If you’ve been struggling with your energy, mood, or overall well-being, start with your sleep. You might be surprised at the ripple effect it creates.
