Health Insurance Myths That Cost You: Clearing Up Common Misconceptions Before January 15.
We’re down to the wire—just two days left before the final open enrollment deadline for 2026 health insurance coverage starting February 1.
But before the window closes, let’s clear up some serious misinformation that came up during open enrollment—errors that could cost you thousands if not corrected.
MYTH #1: “A minor can’t be on a health insurance plan by themselves.”
False. A child can have their own plan on the Marketplace, even if no parent is getting coverage.
✅ What’s required is that an adult be listed on the application—but that adult can be marked as “not applying for coverage.”
❌ A client was incorrectly told they had to enroll just because their daughter did. She paid for unnecessary coverage all year based on bad advice from another agent.
Moral of the story: make sure you’re working with a licensed, experienced broker who understands Marketplace rules.
MYTH #2: “If you make too much money, you can’t use the Marketplace.”
Wrong again. Anyone who is a U.S. citizen can enroll in a Marketplace plan—no matter their income.
Here’s the truth:
- The amount of tax credit you receive is based on your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), household size, ages, and zip code.
- If your income is too high, you may not qualify for a subsidy—but you can still enroll on the Marketplace.
- Unfortunately, some CPAs, bookkeepers, and accountants don’t fully understand how these tax credits work or how they impact your taxes.
If you’ve been told otherwise, let’s talk. I’m happy to explain how the tax credit works—and when to update your income so you’re not surprised at tax time.
January 15 = Final Deadline
If you:
- Were auto-renewed into the wrong plan
- Need to change carriers or doctors
- Lost coverage recently
