Let’s Talk Toxins: How Everyday Products Affect Your Health
This week, we’re talking about toxins—and how they can impact your overall wellness.
Now, there are a lot of things in our environment we can’t control. But the good news? There are also a lot of things we can—and that’s where we should focus our energy.
Start With the Yuka App
One of my favorite tools for reducing toxins is a free app called Yuka—spelled Y-U-K-A, with a little carrot logo. You can scan product barcodes and get a rating from “poor” to “excellent,” along with a breakdown of what’s harmful and why. It’s super eye-opening!
And here’s the kicker—even products from the same brand can vary widely. Just because one product rates well doesn’t mean they all do. That’s why I scan everything, every time.
Swap Candles for Diffusers
I know… we all love a good candle. But most candles—yes, even the “clean” ones—release toxins that can be harmful to both you and your pets. If anyone in your household has respiratory issues, candles can be especially problematic.
Instead, I use diffusers with 100% pure essential oils. Just make sure the oils you use are truly pure—most on the market aren’t. I’ll drop a link below for the oils I trust.
Clean Smarter, Not Harsher
Most commercial cleaning products are packed with toxins. I use a concentrated cleaner called On Guard, which I mix into a spray bottle. It smells amazing, disinfects naturally, and uses ingredients like eucalyptus—which is another great natural disinfectant.
I also ditched dryer sheets (toxic!) and switched to dryer balls with a spritz of essential oils. And fabric softener? Just no. It’s one of the worst offenders. There are safer, better-smelling alternatives out there.
Watch Your Skincare & Makeup
Ladies, this one’s big—our skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs everything we put on it. So when you’re applying lotion, makeup, or skincare, make sure it’s non-toxic. Again, Yuka is your best friend here.
Even within the same brand, some products are better than others. For example, my mascara brand has a plumping version that rates well—but the lengthening one? Not so much. Scan everything before you buy!
Toxins in skincare and cosmetics are often endocrine disruptors, which means they can affect your hormones and metabolism. Not something to mess with.
Don’t Forget Perfume
Perfumes may smell good, but most of them are full of synthetic ingredients that can mess with your health. Instead, I use essential oils as my fragrance. They smell amazing and people constantly tell me I smell good—and it’s all thanks to the oils!
Final Thoughts
Reducing toxins is one of the easiest ways to support your wellness—and it’s something you have control over. Focus on small swaps: maybe you’re not ready to toss everything, and that’s OK. Start where you can.
I’ll drop links to some of the non-toxic products I love, along with a discount for wholesale orders (usually 20–25% off). And if you want to talk more about wellness or your health coverage options, you can always book a time on my calendar.
Until next week—peace out and breathe easier!
